Abstract

1453086 Mixing apparatus J D ROBERTSON 21 Nov 1973 54046/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for simultaneously feeding scrap and base material to an extruder 20 comprises a scrap material hopper 18 having a lower converging wall portion 41 defining an outlet 44, a base material hopper 19 positioned below the hopper 18 and having an outlet 45 leading to the extruder 20. The scrap material, e.g. plastics, is circulated through a system to the top of the hopper 18 and the material is fed by an auger conveyor 46 to the outlet 45 of the hopper 19, the latter being fed with base material and coloured material from respective hoppers 21, 22 through an inlet shoot 71, both those materials falling under gravity to the outlet 45. Alternatively the coloured material can be fed to the hopper 19 from a bin (81) by an auger conveyor (82) disposed at the lower portion of that hopper, Fig. 4 (not shown). An annular housing 48 which surrounds the auger conveyor 46 prevents mixing of the scrap and base materials in the main portion of the hopper 19, but such mixing however occurs at the outlet opening 45 and at the feed conduit 50 for the extruder 20. The auger conveyor 46 is driven from a motor 56 through a drive shaft 52 on which a bridge breaker assembly in the form of a pair of paddles 61 is mounted, for rotation with the shaft 52, in the lower portion of the hopper 18. Bin level controls 75, 76, 77 are provided to detect the presence or absence of material at their elevations in their associated hopper. The system referred to above comprises an inducer blower 11 which feeds an air stream containing scrap material along a conduit 12 to an air eliminator 10 from which the air is expelled through openings 33, and the scrap material falls into a grinder 14 in which it is converted into ground scrap, which is then conveyed along a conduit 16 by means of air supplied by a blower 15 to a centrifugal separator 17 in which the air is separated from the ground scrap which falls into the hopper 18.
