Abstract

1453069 Automatic control of registration BROWN & WILLIAMSON TOBACCO CORP 19 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972] 58837/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] To cut a cigarette paper 16 in register with marks pre-printed thereon the speed of a rotating knife 18 is adjusted by a system in which lag, lead, or in-register pulses are formed in a controller 26 from the pulse output of a mark detector 24 and knife shaft encoder 28, the simultaneous occurrence of a knife pulse and a lag or lead pulse being entered in a reversible counter whose count is then entered into a store and also effects a step change in knife speed, while the simultaneous occurrence of a knife pulse and an in-register pulse causes the store to be read into the counter to cause adjustment of the speed to the stored value. The operation is such that speed adjustments are made in steps until registration is achieved, whereupon the speed is re-adjusted back to the penultimate step. Correction is effected by a stepping motor 30 driving one input to a differential gear 32, the other input to which is a constant speed drive and the output drives the knife. The knife speed encoder produces two sets of pulses, one at 500 per revolution and the other at one per revolution. The latter acts as an enabling pulse for a counter, in which an appropriate one of the 500 is selected by thumb wheel switches. This selected one is compared in time with a pulse from the photo-electric mark detector 24, using logic circuits. The arrangement is such that each time the selected knife pulse lags or leads the mark pulse a reversible counter is stepped by one step. The count is supplied to the store and to a pulse rate multiplier which thus produces pulses whose frequency adjusts, in steps, to the magnitude of the error; these pulses are applied in the appropriate directional sequence to the stepping correcting motor. This may run continuously, to rectify errors due to paper stretch &c. The logic circuits also provide pulses to a registration indicator, comprising a rotating neon tube which flashes at instants corresponding to lag and lead errors, and the instant of cutting. This enables manual adjustment when starting the machine.
