Abstract
1452969 Folding edges of non-metallic sheet material A BOCCA and M PAGANI 31 Dec 1973 [19 Feb 1973] 60264/73 Heading B5K [Also in Division B2] A machine for folding and cementing an edge of a workpiece 14 comprises (a) an electric control motor 7, (b) positioning means for a folding pressure foot 8 and a counter blade 11 interacting with the workpiece 14; (c) means for operating a block 12 and a hammer 13 for workpiece feed; (d) means for controlling the feed of the workpiece 14; (e) means for controlling the flow of adhesive to the foot 8 for cementing the workpiece 14; (f) means for operating a knife 10 interacting with the counter blade 11 for making cuts or indentations in the workpiece 14 being folded; (g) a device operated by a single manual control, e.g. a pedal 19, comprising (i) a first electric contact the closing of which energizes electromagnetic means 26, 88 for simultaneously activating the pressure foot 8 and the counter blade 11, and for controlling supply of the adhesive, respectively, and (ii) a second electric contact 141 the closing of which causes the energization of further electromagnetic means 64, 95 for activating the knife operating means and adjusting the workpiece feed controlling means, respectively, the closing of the first and second contacts being separate and independent from one another; and (h) means for stopping the machine with the block 12 separated from the hammer 13. The foot 8, Figs. 1 and 2, is fixed to a lever 42 pivoted at 43 and having a pin 46 thereon which engages a forked end of a lever 40 pivoted at 41, Fig. 1. The lever 44 is hinged to a lever 39 hinged to a rod 36, Fig. 3, having a cylinder 37 thereon engaged by a rocking lever 30. Lowering of the foot 8 is effected by energization of an electromagnet 26 the core of which is provided with a rod 29 to rock the lever 30. Upward movement of the foot 8 is ensured by a return spring (not shown) acting on the lever 40. The counter blade 11 is secured to a lever 47 pivoted at 48 and having an adjustable screw 49 urged into contact with the lever 42 by a spring 50. Thus, the counterblade 11 is lowered or raised with the foot 8. The knife 10 is driven by a cam 51, Figs. 1 and 2, keyed to a main shaft 24, Fig. 1, driven by the motor 7. To drive the knife 10, the cam 51 engages a ball bearing 52 on a block 53 keyed to a slidable rod 54 carrying a rod 58 with a pin 59 thereon engaging in a slot 60 in the knife 10. To disengage the knife 10, a rod 62 on the core of an electromagnet 64 engages a projection 63 on the block 53 so that the bearing 52 does not engage the cam 51. A tank 65, Fig. 1, for adhesive is connected to a delivery gear pump with one gear keyed to a shaft 66, Fig. 3. Oscillating motion of a rod 68 is transferred into a rotary, unidirectional stickslip motion of the shaft 66 by a ratchet-geartype device 67 comprising a rod 69 having notches 70 for positional adjustment of a part 71 of a clutch the second part 72 of which is formed by the end of the rod 68. A spring 73 holds the parts 71, 72 disengaged. A metal wire 74, Fig. 4, contained in a sheath 75 is fixed to the part 71 and claimped by a clamp 76 to a lever 77 pivotable at 78. A slidable rod 82 engages both the lever 77 and a spring-loaded rod 86 inserted in the outlet of the adhesive pump, the rod 86 being movable to allow the outflow of the adhesive. A rod 87 fixed to the core of an electromagnet 88 engages the lever 77. The workpiece feed is controlled by a rod 89, Fig. 3, secured to a shaft 90 and angular movement of which is limited by two adjustable screws 91. A metal wire 93 contained in a sheath 94 connects the rod 89 to the pedal 19. The rod 89 is engaged by a rod 96 on the core of an electromagnet 95 and is acted on by a return spring 97. The gears connecting the shaft 24 to the adhesive pump, the block 12 and the hammer 13 are shown in Fig. 6. An eccentric 99 is fixed to the shaft 24 and is hinged to a check rod 101 hinged at 105 to the machine and hinged via a rod 108 to a rod 111 hinged to a block 113 carrying the shaft 90. A rod 114 connects a fork of the rod 111 to a clamp 116 and a rod 117. A rod 119 connected to the block 12 and the hammer 13 is clamped to the rod 117. The rod 68 is connected to the clamp 116 to transmit motion to the adhesive pump by the device 67 and the shaft 66. The pedal 19, Fig. 7, comprises a fixed part 120 with a first movable part 121 mounted thereon by a ball bearing 125 and oscillatable relative thereto about a bolt 126. A second movable part 127 is connected to the part 121 by rods 122 and is spring urged to its rest position. A belt 124 fixed to the part 121 limits the movement of the part 127. An oscillatable lever 130 is provided to a section 129 on the part 121 and carries a roller 134 bearing on the part 127. A cylindrical body 138 contacts microcontacts which are closable by a sliding element part of which is formed by a rod 139. When closed, a first microcontact excites the electromagnets 26, 88. An angular section 140 is fixed to one side of the part 127 to enable the operator to control the rotation of the part 121 relative to the part 120. This rotation closes a microcontact 141 to excite the electromagnets 64, 95. Initially, with the machine ready for use, the circuit of the electromagnet 26 is closed to hold the foot 8 and the counter blade 11 raised. The electromagnets 88, 64, 95 are de-energized. In use, a workpiece 14 is placed on the table 3 and downward pressure is applied on the part 127 by the pedal 19 to (a) de-energize the electromagnet 26 and lower the foot 8 and the counter blade 11 on to the workpiece 14 and (b) energize the electromagnet 88 to move the rod 86 to allow free flow of adhesive. On rotation of the part 121 relative to the part 120, the electromagnets 64, 95 are energized to cause the knife 10 to be operated and adjustment of the pitch of the feed. Downwards pressure on the part 127 also controls the closing, in stages, of a selector which controls the different speeds of the motor 7. The motor 7 may be stopped with the block 12 and the hammer 13 in separated position by a disc 144, Fig. la, keyed to the shaft 24 and having a notch 145. The presence of the notch 145 between two magnetic heads 146, 147 energizes the brake of the motor 7 when current thereto is interrupted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,168,898.
