1452883 Tunnelling shields TSENTRA N I I PROEKTNO KONSTRUKT INST PROKHODCHESKIKH MASHIN I KOMPLEXOV DLYA UGOLNOI GORNOI PROMYSHLEN I PODZEM STROITELSTVA 6 Feb 1975 5143/75 Heading E1F To facilitate removal of broken out rock from the face of the tunnel being formed in loose and unstable rock by the use of a tunnelling shield comprising a knife ring 4 and horizontal and vertical partition knives 5, 6 there is tiltably connected with the horizontal partition knives 5 horizontal platforms 7 that are each spring loaded so that, as broken rock passes rearwards of the knives to accummulate on a platform, the platform will eventually tilt downwards under the weight of the rock before returning to the horizontal when the rock has slid rearwards off of the plate for subsequent removal rearwards through the shield. In one embodiment each platform 7 is pivotally attached to the rear of a partition knife 5 as is spring loaded by a laminated half spring secured by one end to knife, having at the other end a roller for engaging the underside of the platform, and being engaged at the middle portion by an abutment dependent from the knife. In a second embodiment the platform is spring loaded by a coil sprink acting between the knife and one arm of a bell crank lever whose's other arm acts on the platform which is pivotally connected to the knife. In a third embodiment the platform, which is rigidly secured at its forward end to the knife 5 is made of resilient sheet material.
