Abstract

1452753 Cationic azo dyestuffs IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Oct 1974 [18 Oct 1973] 48489/73 Heading C4P [Also in Division D1] The invention comprises water-soluble dyes which are free from SO 3 H groups and which have the formula where A is an optionally substituted aromatic radical, either carbocyclic or heterocyclic, T is H, C 1-4 alkyl, optionally substituted aryl, aralkyl or carbamoyl, CN, OH or (C 1-4 alkoxy)carbonyl or T may be a point of attachment of Y is H or optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, L is a direct link or a linking radical, n is 1 or 2 and X is a nitrogen, sulphur, or phosphorus containing cationic group in association with an anion Z which may be the anion COO<SP>(-)</SP> of a group -LCOOH. The dyes of formula above are prepared by reaction of a corresponding compound having a group -CH 2 Hal where Hal is Cl or Br in place of the group -CH 2 -X<SP>(+)</SP> with a compound containing a quaternizable atom and the starting materials may be prepared by halomethylation of the pyridine ring. The dyes may be used to colour cellulose acetate and triacetate, polyacrylonitrile and, especially, polyester and polyester blend textile materials in greenishyellow to orange shades. Mixtures of the dyes with known reactive dyes may be used to dye polyester-cotton blends.
