Abstract
1452216 Securing hubs to shafts BORGWARNER CORP 18 Jan 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 02462/74 Heading F2U A rotary member 14 is secured to a shaft 10 by means of a split sleeve member 40 which is adjusted axially to obtain a wedging action between an internal truncated conical surface 24 in member 14 and a complementary external conical surface 46 on the sleeve member 40, thereby contracting the latter member on to the shaft, and achieving a locking frictional engagement between the rotary member 14 and the shaft 10, for their rotation together about a common axis. The angle of the conical surfaces is chosen to provide a self-locking arrangement the angle being no greater than an angle whose tangent equals the coefficient of friction, and suitable angles may lie between 2‹ and 10‹. Sleeve 40 is provided with a tapered flange 48, and a split snap ring 50, Fig. 6, may optionally be fitted as a wedge in the gap adjacent to flange 48, as an additional locking device. A second sleeve member 40 may be fitted, as in Fig. 1.
