Abstract
1452147 Lithium-iodine cell WILSON GREATBATCH Ltd 13 Dec 1973 [31 Jan 1973] 57804/73 Heading H1B A lithium-iodine cell comprises an inner housing 10 of plastics material containing lithium anode 6 and current collector 9 retained in a holder 7, an insulated conductor 17 penetrating the housing and being connected to the collector, the housing also containing iodine-containing material 20 and a cathode collector 8 connected to a conductor 16. The preferred material 20 is a charge transfer complex comprising 2-vinyl pyridine polymer and iodine and is a viscous, flowable substance. The material 20 fills the housing 10 and the housing is sealed at its open end by placing a fibreglass strip 26 on the material 20, placing a layer of epoxy material 21 on the strip and positioning a lid 22 of plastics material on the layer 21 whereby the epoxy material seals the lid to the housing. The leads 16, 17 are of zirconium and nickel leads 27, 28 are welded thereto and the assembly is placed in second housing 30 of plastics material, Fig.4 so that the lid 22 is adjacent the bottom 31 of the second housing. A lid 38 of plastics material for the second housing has openings 40, 39 receiving, respectively, the leads 16, 27 and 17, 28, the leads being bent as shown. The interior of housing 30 is subjected to a vacuum and polyester bolting material is admitted through the opening 40 whereby the inner housing 10 is encapsulated. The material also seals the openings 39, 40 and forms a raised portion. This assembly is placed in an outer stainless steel casing 50, Fig.6, hermetically sealed by a stainless steel closure 68 having insulating bushings 61, 62 through which stainless steel terminals 58, 59 extend.
