Abstract

1451807 Hardness testing K M OESTERLE 29 Nov 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 55527/73 Heading G1S The infinitesimal hardness value (IHV) of plastics, coating and ductile materials has previously been determined using normal microhardness testers and by repeatedly moving and pressing a Vickers pyramid under varying loads on to the test piece for constant periods and recording the indentation depth y with reference to the corresponding load F, Fig. 1. The quotient F/y is then plotted against F and extrapolated to the limiting value F#O, the intersection between the extrapolated curve and the F/y ordinate axis then giving the IHV value. The method of the invention has the indenter penetrating under a varying load and employs an apparatus, Fig. 3, in which an indenter 2 controlled by electrical or mechanical means 3, 4 has its depth recorded by means 5. Signals representing the loads and the depths are amplified at 6, 8 and recorded at 9, which readings are used by a computer to find the point of intersection of the curve with the F/y axis. Tests may be performed in an air conditioned chamber into which test pieces are moved on a conveyer, or the test piece may be stressed mechanically or by heating or cooling, or subjection to acid or solvent vapours or corrosive gases. Further stresses may be applied electrically or magnetically or by many forms of radiation. The indenter may be a rotatable sphere, a knife-edged wheel or a star-shaped wheel.
