Abstract

1451571 Froth flotation MITSUI MINING & SMELTING O Ltd 9 May 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 20621/74 Heading B2H Polyvinyl chloride is separated from a mixture containing it and other plastics e.g. polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyamides, polyacrylates, phenolics, ureas, polyesters and melamines, by flotation in an aqueous liquid medium. The polyvinyl chloride is recovered as a residue while all the other materials float. Frothing agents such as pine oil, cresylic acid, eucalyptus oil, camphor oil, propyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, methyl isobutyl carbinol, pyridine and ortho-toluidine, and wetting agents such as tannic acid, a quebracho extract, gelatin, glue, saponin or the Na, K, Ca and Mg salts of lignin sulphonic acid, may be added. Gas bubbles can be generated in the aqueous medium by mechanical stirring, by bubbling a gas through the medium by the release of gases dissolved under pressure, by vacuum evacuation to release dissolved gases and by electrolyses. Suitable gases include air, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and argon. The plastics material has a size between 1 mm and 30 mm and may be washed with a synthetic detergent such as an alkylarylsulphonic acid salt, an alkylsulphonic acid salt, an alkylsulphuric acid salt or a higher alcohol sulphuric acid ester before subjecting it to the flotation process. The said aqueous liquid medium may contain NaCl, MgCl 2 , MgBr 2 , Mg SO 4 , CaSO 4 , K 2 SO 4 . Na 2 SO 4 , Ca(HCO 3 ) 2 and NaHCO 3 , and may be heated.
