Abstract

1451280 Styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer production MOBIL OIL CORP 4 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 24744/74 Heading C3P A polymer suitable for use as a reinforcing filler for rubber is obtained by polymerizing styrene and divinylbenzene in a liquid slurrying medium in the presence of an anionic initiator and of a block polymer dispersing agent, to pro- duce a finely-divided cross-linked copolymer containing functional groups which are reactive with the rubber under curing conditions. The latter requirement is achieved by (a) using a hydrocarbylalkali metal compound as initiator followed by reaction of the terminal groups with appropriate functional compounds, such as oxygen, CS 2 or benzothiazyl disulphide, (b) using an alkali metal terminated unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer (which provides the functional groups i.e. double bonds) or (c) using a mixture of the initiators mentioned under (a) and (b) optionally followed by termination with the above type of reagent. Examples refer to the copolymerization of styrene and divinyl benzene in hexane using a s-butyllithium/polyisoprenyllithium mixture as initiator and styrene-b-tbutylstyrene, styrene - b - butadiene or styrene - b - isoprene polymers as dispersant. Typical terminating agents are air, COS, oxygen followed by acetic acid, propylene sulphide and dipentamethylene thiuram hexasulphide. Paraffin wax is present during some of the polymerizations. The polymers are tested as additives in conventional SBR curing recipes.
