Abstract

1451098 Air lock METODGOLY AB 26 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 49941/73 Heading B8A A variable volume lock is positioned between an upper zone and a lower zone at a higher pressure than the upper zone and is operated so that the volume of the lock is relatively large during charging of the lock from the upper zone and is reduced during discharging of the lock to the lower zone. In the figure, the outlet 5 from the lock is closed by valve 6, the volume of the lock is increased by expansion of flexible walls 16 towards the position shown, the inlet 3 to the lock is opened by valve 4 and material enters the lock the volume of which is kept at a maximum value during leading. Valve 4 is then closed, pressure in the lock is increased by air through pipe 18, valve 6 is opened fluid is pumped into the space between flexible wall 16 and rigid wall 19 of the lock 2 to decrease the volume of the lock and the material is discharged into lower zone 7 from where it may be continuously pneumatically conveyed via outlet 8. When valve 6 is closed again, the pressure in the lock causes back flow of the fluid, the volume of the lock increases and the pressure in the lock decreases, so that when valve 4 is re-opened the pressures in upper compartment 1 and lock 2 are approximately equal.
