Abstract

1450927 Thermostat circuit SIEMENS AKSJESELSKAP 27 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 59760/73 Heading H2H A thermostat circuit comprises a temperature sensitive resistor 4 in or in parallel with the igniting circuit of a triac 2, is arranged with other components on a heatsink and is connected so that the currents through the temperature dependent resistor when the triac is on and off cause the circuit to exhibit thermal hysteresis. As shown, 4 is a NTC resistor and is mounted with resistors 5 and 9 on a heatsink. The load 1 is a heating element. Terminals 13 and 16 are supplied with A.C. With the triac off and the NTC resistor hot flow resistance, current flow is via resistors 5, 4, 6 and 8. As the NTC resistor cools, the voltage across it rises until it is sufficient to fire diac 3 and the triac. The current path through 4 now becomes 7, 6, 4, 2 and this current is arranged to be greater than that with the triac off. The triac stays on until the NTC resistor resistance drops sufficiently for the diac to turn off. The 90 degree phase shift introduced by capacitor 7 (which could be replaced by an inductor) minimizes radio interference by firing the triac at the zero crossings. The series circuit of resistor 9 and potentiometer 10 allows variation of the thermostat setting. The circuit may be used in a refrigeration system with a PTC resistor. Several variations including placing the potentiometer 10 in series or parallel with the temperature sensor to control its operating point are described.
