Abstract
1450734 Reciprocating compressors BORG-WARNER CORP 11 March 1974 [4 April 1973] 10798/74 Heading F1N In a compressor having a plurality of pistons 34 each reciprocable in a respective cylinder 20 by a non-rotatable wobble plate 36, the pressure developed in a sealed casing 10 by gas blowing past the pistons 34 is controlled thereby to alter the forces acting on the undersides of the pistons and so cause a change in the inclination of the wobble plate about a point 85 spaced from and rotatable about the axis of the wobble drive-shaft 22. When the compressor is working at full capacity oil from a rotary oil pump 100, driven by the shaft 22, is delivered to a chamber 108 to urge, via connected pistons 53, 54, 61, the wobble plate to its maximum tilt position. The output pressure of the pump 100 is controlled by a relief valve 154 and is applied through a line 162 to open a valve 160 controlling a line 164, 170 connecting the gas suction line 172 to the sealed casing 10. As the suction gas-pressure falls, a valve 166 in the line 164, 170 responds to the pressure fall in a branch connection 171 and moves an element 168 to a position restricting flow from the casing 10 to the suction line 172. This causes the casing pressure to increase and thereby decrease the inclination of the wobble plate until eventually the inclination becomes zero and the pistons remain at top dead centre. The wobble plate is mounted on a universal joint assembly 46 movable by the pistons 53, 54, 61. The assembly 46 comprises a yoke 48 having oppositely disposed trunnions 49, 50 received in bearings 51, 52 in the wobble plate 36, the yoke 48 being movable about pivots 57 carried by the pistons 53, 54 and disposed perpendicular to the trunnions 49, 50. Wobbling motion is transmitted to the plate 36 by a rotatable drive ring 60 having ears 62 disposed either side of a squared portion of the drive-shaft 22 and connected by a pin 64 extending through an elongated slot 66 in the driveshaft. A spring 90 in the shaft urges the pin 64 in a direction tending to reduce the wobble inclination A ball bearing assembly 72 is disposed between the plate 36 and the drive ring 60. Balancing is achieved by weights 73 secured to the wobble plate and by a heavy ring 68 carried by a support ring 69 attached to the driving ring 60. The balance ring 68 is also connected by two links 82 to a reaction ring 80 press fitted on to the shaft 22, the links 82 determining the pivot point 85 for the wobble plate. Gas enters the cylinder from an outer suction plenum 124 in a head 14 through valve controlled ports 128 and is delivered under pressure through valve controlled outlet ports 130 leading to a central discharge chamber 126.
