1450437 Puln-sheet of synthetic polymeric material MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 19 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972 28 Dec 1972] 58892/73 Heading D2B A sheet of pulp used for the manufacture of svnthetic papers comprises flake-like or sliver-like structures of a synthetic polymer and 50-500% by wt., based on the dry wt. of the pulp, of a liquid incorporated therein, said structures each having irregular voids therein having a wall thickness of at most 5 microns, said voids being loaded with more than 50% by volume, based on the volume of the structure, of a finely divided inorganic substance having a particle size of not more than 500 microns. The flake-like structures may be made by the method described in Patent 1416894. Numerous synthetic polymers and inorganic substances are listed. The liquid may be water, an aqueous solution, an alcohol, or a liquid capable of partially dissolving or swelling the polymer. It may be incorporated into the pulp at a stage before, during, or after the pulp is formed into a sheet. Substances such as surface, active agents, cellulose pulp, or a polyvinyl alcohol may be added to the liquid to facilitate penetration of the liquid into the pulp. A tenacity enhancing agent such as an acrylamide polymer may be added to an aqueous slurry of the pulp so that the resulting pulp sheet has improved suitability for papermaking. The examples describe the preparation of sheets comprising polyethylene flakes of appropriate type.
