1449706 Spring upholstery HOOVER BALL & BEARING CO 21 Feb 1974 [23 May 1973] 7967/74 Heading A4M [Also in Division F2] An assembly of springs comprises a plurality of upholstery springs 16 mounted on a frame 12 and connected together to form a spring deck disposed above the frame and yieldably movable toward the frame, at least some of the springs 16 and/or 18 each comprising a one piece wire bent to form a horizontal body portion 22 forming the top of the assembly and depending end portions 24, Figs. 3, 4, each end portion 24 comprising a plurality of connecting bars 40, 42 and horizontal torsion bars 44 extending between and inter-connecting adjacent connecting bars 40, 42, alternate ones 40 of the connecting bars in the unloaded condition of the spring 16, as in Fig. 3, being substantially horizontal or less steeply inclined in the opposite sense than the remaining ones 42 of the connecting bars, the assembly being such that when the body portions 22 are subjected in use to a downward load the alternate ones 40 of the bars displace to a position in which they are inclined in the same sense as the remaining ones 42 of the bars, as in Fig. 4. The springs 16 extend longitudinally and transversely of the frame 12 and are clipped, at 51, to internal support springs 18 carried by cross rails 13 of the frame and, at 50, to a border wire 20. As shown, a foot portion 46 for securing to the frame, e.g. by staples, extends from the lowermost torsion bar. In a modified form of spring end 24a, Fig. 7, a generally upright bar 34 is connected to and between torsion bars 32 extending from the lowermost connecting bar 28 and a mounting foot 36.
