Abstract
1449673 Fire extinguisher discharge assembly GRAVINER Ltd 5 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 14061/73 Heading A5A A discharge assembly for a pressurised fluid container e.g. a fire extinguisher comprises a fluid outlet in the container 10 closed by a frangible diaphragm 18, the assembly comprising a housing 12 for holding a first piston 24 slidably mounted in guide 38 and abutting diaphragm 18 to provide a support therefor, a locking system for the piston 24 comprising three balls 26 located in recesses with inclined surfaces provided in the cylindrical guide, a second piston 28 slidably movable inside the first piston 24 and urged by spring 30 to abut piston 24 and keep the balls 26 in place, a manually-operated control cable 48 and a radial bore 52 connected to a hole 54 which communicates with the space 58 above piston 28 and which can receive and hold an explosive charge. In operation cable 48 is pulled which results in piston 28 moving away from piston 24 so allowing the balls 26 to drop out. Piston 24 then can move away from diaphragm 18 which fractures as a result of fluid pressure so allowing fluid to escape to outlet 46. The assembly can also be opened by detonating an explosive charge in bore 52, the high gas pressure thus produced entering the space 58 and forcing piston 28 away from piston 24 and thus allowing the balls 26 to drop out as described above. On rupture of the diaphragm 18 piston 24 (with piston 28) moves along guide 38 to be held by tabs 60.
