Abstract

Rails, metallic built-up.-Tramway rails have a renewable tread b, Fig. 1, with dovetail portion b<1> resting on the base a and engaged by a rib c' on a strip c which extends up to the level of the top of the tread and serves as the guard flange. The strip c has a thickened edge or rib c<2>, and is held down by taper washers h and secured by bolts d. studs, or tie-rods. In a modification, a rib may be rolled on the base a to engage a groove in the strip c, or pins may be provided on one part to enter grooves in the other part. The holes in the rails may be slotted horizontally to allow for expansion and contraction, or vertically to allow vertical movement of the strip c, and the guard may be thickened at curves, as shown at j, Fig. 2. In another form, the rib c' may rest on the tread rail b, while the strip c closely engages the head a<1> of the base a, the rib c<2> preferably being dispensed with, and the washers h reversed. The joints of the tread and guide rails b, c may be staggered with respect to the joints in the base a, and the tread rail joints may be cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Access to the bolts may be provided by inspection boxes with covers.
