Abstract

1448416 Vehicular safety devices NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 19 Sept 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 40844/74 Heading B7H An automatic transmission is prevented from moving out of "neutral" or "parking" until a vehicle occupant has fastened his seat belt by a solenoid actuated plunger 26 which engages notches 32, 34 formed in a connecting rod of the shift linkage and which correspond to the "N" and "P" positions. On deactivation of the solenoid 24<SP>1</SP> the plunger is retracted by a spring 35. An electrical control circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) for activating the solenoid includes ignition, seat and belt switches (40, 48 and 50, 52). When an occupant sits and switches on without fastening his belt current is passed via a normally closed relay switch (54) to the solenoid. On fastening the belt a coil controlling the relay switch is actuated and the switch opened to cutoff the energy supply. The circuit may include a switch which cuts out the control circuit when the vehicle moves thus preventing accidental locking of the shift mechanism.
