Abstract
1447594 Preparing powder paints FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 20 Aug 1974 [20 Aug 1973 (2)] 36601/74 Headings C3B and C3P Powder paint compositions are prepared by: (A) preparing a liquid paint by mixing (I) a copolymer containing reactive groups and having a glass transition temperature of 40- 90‹ C. and number average M.W. 1000-15,000, (II) an inert solvent and (III) pigment and passing this into an evaporating zone; (B) supplying heat to the zone to maintain the temperature above the melting point of I but below its degradation point and above the temperature at which II begins to vapourize; (C) passing the solution to a separating zone, whilst maintaining the temperature as in (B) above, causing II to vapourize and allowing the molten non-volatiles to collect in a molten state; (D) removing the volatile components; (E) cooling the non-volatiles to a solid; and (F) comminuting to form a pigmented powder. A modification of the method involves the additional steps: (G) blending a cross-linking agent with the powder from (F); (H) mixing at a temperature above the melting point of the particles but below that at which cross-linking occurs; (I) cooling to a solid; (J) comminuting the resultant solid to form a powder coating composition. In most of the examples I is a copolymer of glycidyl (meth)acrylate with other unsaturated monomers which may, e.g. be cross-linked with a salinated straight chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. In one example (18) the ractive monomer is 2-hydroxyethyl methaerylate and the cross-linking agent ZnCl 2 . The powder may contain a flow control agent, e.g. polylauryl acrylate.
