Abstract

1447421 Shearing STAMCO DIVISION THE MONARCH MACHINE TOOL CO 14 Feb 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 6873/74 Heading B3W [Also in Division B4] A web slitting apparatus for slitting metal sheets comprises a pair of rotatable arbors 10, 11 having disc-shaped shearing blades 16, 17 mounted thereon in axially and radially aligned shearing engagement and relatively rotatable interlocking means 60 on respective arbors for preventing relative axial movement thereof while permitting relative rotation of the shearing blades. The arbor 10 is formed with a journal 25 rotatably mounted in roller bearings 26 mounted in the bore of a sleeve 42 which is rotatable in a housing 13. The opposite end of the arbor is formed with a journal 28 similarly mounted in a roller-bearing 27 and sleeve 43 rotatable in a housing 14. The mounting of the arbor is such as to permit a certain axial movement of the latter. The arbor 11 is rotatably mounted in bearings 19, 21 and 23 mounted in sleeves 40 and 41 respectively the bearing 19 being such as to prevent axial movement of the arbor 11. The bores of each pair of sleeves are eccentric such that by rotating the sleeves by a motor 50 via a gear drive 45, 46, 47, 48, 53, 54, the arbors may be moved apart to bring the cutting discs 16, 17 into the desired degree of radial engagement. The interlocking means comprises a pair of discs 61, 62 fixed in axially spaced relation on the arbor 10 and a single disc fixed to the arbor 11 and adapted to closely slide between the two discs. In a modification Fig. 7 (not shown), the interlocking discs (131, 132, 133) may be mounted on the journals (145), (137) of their respective arbors (135), (136). The relative diameters of the interlocking discs, is such that they remain in engagement during the full range of adjustment of the spacing of the arbors. The free axial movement of the arbor 10 together with the interlocking device maintains the coacting blades in their correct axial position irrespective of, e.g. thermal expansion or vibration of the arbors. The housing 14 is mounted on a plate 34 which may be removed by a screw-and-nut device 31, 33 so as to disengage the arbor journals 22, 28 from the housing in order to be able to remove or replace the blades 16, 17. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the cutting blades 70, 71, 72 are mounted on sleeves 75, 76 drivingly connected for rotation with respective shafts 77, 78 by keys 93, 95. The sleeve 75 is prevented from axial movement on the shaft 77 by means of locknuts 90 engaging the adjacent end of the sleeve. The sleeve 78 is permitted a certain axial movement by adjusting lock-nuts 99 so that a clearance is provided between the latter and the end of the adjacent shaft. Interlocking discs 100, 101, 102 are provided on the sleeves, a lubricating device being in contact with the discs 101, 102. The arbors may be positively rotated or rotated only via the pull of the web between the blades.
