1447069 Apparatus for cooking rice CH'UNHSIUNG CHIANG and CHENG-WEI LIN 5 Sept 1973 41818/73 Heading A2Q [Also in Division A4] A cooking apparatus for boiling grain such as rice comprises an electrically heated cooker 80 having inner and outer kettles (84), (88) respectively, a washing basin 40 positioned on top of the cooker including an agitator 14 and a drain pin, 45 controlling an outlet 41 of the basin, means for supplying water and rice to the basin, and an electrically powered driving mechanism with associated electrical switching means to effect operations of feeding water and rice to the basin, agitation and cooking rice in the inner kettle. An electric motor 10 is energized via a contact (91) controlled by a time (90) to rotate the agitator 14, a worm gear 20 and a cam 70. A circular projection 21 extending only partly along the circumference on one face of the gear 20 actuates a microswitch 22 thereby energizing a solenoid 31 which allows water to flow through a pipe 37 into a reservoir 30 containing a pipe 32, the latter being provided with a hole 321. The pipe 32 can be moved up and down along a pipe 35 means of a rake 322 and a pinion 34 so that the amount of water flowing into the basin can be varied. A triangular plate (23) mounted on the other face of the worm gear 20 actuates a microswitch (24) which in turn deenergizes a solenoid 52 thereby causing a gate 53 in a hopper 50 to close thus controlling the amount of rice falling into the basin. The excess quantity of water in the basin is discharged through a hole (601) and a drain pipe 60. As the projection 21 loses contact with the switch 22, a follower 43 on top of a plunger 42 moves up in a notch (71) in the cam 70 thereby pulling a plug 45 upwardly so that the water and the rice in the basin fall into the inner kettle. As the plunger 42 is pressed down by the cam 70, a projection 73 on the cam presses a microswitch 74 to stop the motor 10 and energize an electric heater in the cooker 80. A thermostat in the cooker switches of the heater. The associated electrical circuitry resets itself once the whole cycle is over. There is a provision for supplying water from the reservoir 30 to the outer kettle (88).
