Abstract
1446959 Raising submerged metal objects L M ANDERSEN 14 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 26394/74 Heading B7S [Also in Division B3] Metal objects 8 are salvaged from water by a submersible housing 10 containing compressed thermit 14 enveloped by flux 16 and topped by ignition powder 18 which does not emit gas upon ignition, there being an ignition device 20 for igniting the powder 18 and thermit so as to weld the housing to the object which is raised by lifting means 28, 30 connected to the housing. The powder 18 may also be thermit but compressed to a lesser degree, a cap 22 being pressed into the housing 10 and a steel liner 17 separating the thermit 14 from the compressed flux 16 which may be high cellulose welding rod coating or submersed arc welding flux. A copper ring 40 directs the molten mixture on to the object 8, burning off adhesive bonding a can 36 to a flange 13 on the magnetized housing 10. To prevent escape of oil from a tanker being salvaged the entire device may be covered with a magnetic can having a foam seal. In a modification, Fig. 3, two explosive charges are included, one 52 for removing barnacles &c. 60 and the other 54 with a slightly detonation for forcing the device to make a shallow depression in the object 8 before the thermit charge is ignited. A wood or plastics block 50 is placed between the charge 54 and the ignition powder 18. Attachment lugs may be provided for a hauling line.
