Abstract
1446751 Offshore structures GEORGE G SHARP Inc 4 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 41487/73 Heading E1H [Also in Division F1] A jack-up offshore structure comprises an upper platform or deck 51. Fig. 3 mounted for vertical displacement on a plurality of upper legs 54 fixedly mounted at their lower ends to a lower platform 60 of open latticework construction, the lower platform 60 having a plurality of lower legs 56 which are lowered to the sea bed to support the structure thereon. The lower platform 60 and lower legs 56 have buoyancy tanks 61, 70, 71 to reduce their effective weight. The upper and lower legs 54, 56 may be attached to portions 59 of the lower platform 60 which are independently movable vertically by jacks to compensate for an uneven sea bed 80. In a modification, Figs. 11-22 (not shown) the lower portions of the lower legs comprise pairs of telescopically extendable cylinders (109, 110), which are preferably extended by compressed air or other gas and have pawl and ratchet mechanisms for locking the cylinders in any one of a plurality of relative positions (see Division F1). When locked, the cylinders are flooded by opening a sea cock and venting the gas. The bases of the lower legs may have fluid jets to facilitate raising of the legs from sea bed mud when the structure is to be moved to a new location. In another embodiment, Fig. 25, the lower portions 153 of the upper legs 151 comprise pairs of telescopic cylinders 158, 159, the lower platform being fixedly secured to the cylinders 158, the cylinders 159 now constituting the lower legs. In a further embodiment, Fig. 27, intended for substantially permanent location on a given site, the lower legs 206 have therein a plurality of circumferential pile guides receiving piles 211 which are driven by a driver 212, the piles subsequently being grouted in the legs 206. For deeper waters the structure may have one or more further lower platforms, Fig. 35 (not shown).
