Abstract
1446464 Thermal-rock cutting HUMPHREYS CORP 8 Nov 1973 51824/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division H5] A method of cutting rock 12 involves the use of a plasma torch 20 to direct a plasma stream 86 against the rock and supplying through the plasma stream electrical power to further heat the rock. In one preferred embodiment the impinging of the plasma stream on the rock creates on the rock a molten film and in this film flowing electrical current both further heats the film and the rock underlying the film to form a cut in the rock. Preferably the plasma stream has a velocity of at least 3000 ft/sec, an additive may be supplied via the plasma stream to the molten rock to modify the characteristics thereof, and spalling of the heated rock may be enhanced by directing a jet of coolant fluid against the rock. In the other preferred embodiment dielectric heating and thermal stressing of the rock between two cuts is caused by applying an A.C. voltage of a suitable frequency across the plasma streams of two plasma torches, the streams providing the necessary electrical contact between the electrical supply and rock at the bottoms of the cuts. Preferably the voltage gradient is in the range of 750-7500 volts/inch and the velocity of each plasma stream is in excess of 20 ft./sec. The two procedures may be applied sequentially to the rock.
