Abstract

1446177 Laminates C1BA GEIGY AG 4 Oct 1973 [10 Oct 1972] 46491/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Laminates are made by impregnating fabrics, mats, or fleeces of glass fibre with a solution of suspension of a prepolymer, drying, and pressing at 170-250‹ C. and 5-200 kp/cm.<SP>2</SP>, or precuring the laminates in the press and post-curing in an oven at 200-280‹ C. The prepolymer is made by heating a mixture containing (a) polyimides of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids (I) (b) polyamines (II) D-(NH 2 ) y or (III) and (c) azomethines (IV) R 2 R 3 C=NR 4 , (V) and optionally (d) a curing catalyst, where A and E are C 2-30 radicals ; B is D is a C 2-40 radical; R 1 is a radical obtained by removing the 0 atom from a C 1-8 aldehyde or ketone; R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 can be C # 12 aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or cycloaliphatic-aliphatic, C 6-12 aromatic, C#20 araliphatic, or heterocyclic or heterocyclic-aliphatic; R 2 can also be H; and (R 2 + R 3 ) can, with the C atom to which they are attached, form a cycloaliphatic ring system; and R 5 and either or both of R 2 together with the C atoms to which they are bonded can form 1 or 2 cycloaliphatic rings; x is 2 or 3, y is 2-4, and m is 0À1-2. There may be 0À01-5% wt. based on the mixture of catalyst (d), which may be a peroxide or persalt.
