Abstract

1445178 Heat sealable polyolefin film IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Nov 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 59338/73 Heading B2E A beat scalable polyolefin film is formed from a blend comprising 87.5 to 60 parts polypropylene and 12.5 to 40 parts of a block copolymer of ethylene and propylene, the copolymer containing 0.5 to 40% ethylene and the blend containing 0.2 to 5% ethylene and is coated on at least one surface with heat sealable composition, e.g. copolymers of vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride/alkyl acrylate (e.g. methyl acrylate), butadiene/ acrylonitrile, buta diene/styrene, butadiene/ methyl methacrylate, butadiene/methyl methacrylate/styrene, methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid, vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate/ethylene, vinyl chloride/ethylene, copolymers of terephthalic acid and another dicarboxylic acid with a glycol, polyvinyl acetate and partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate. An anchor coating resin may be included between the film and the heat sealable layer, e.g. a copolymer having up to 90% by weight styrene, up to 80% by wt. of an alkyl acrylate, up to 15% by weight methacrylic acid and 5 to 25 % by weight acrylamide which has been condensed with formaldehyde in n-butanol containing 0.2 to 3 equivalents formaldehyde for each amide group in the copolymer. The surface of the film may be treated before the anchor coating is applied, e.g. with chromic acid, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, ozone, flame, ionising radiation, corona discharge or high voltage electric stress accompanied by corona discharge. Biaxially oriented base films derirved from slit tubes may be employed.
