Abstract
1444736 Olefin polymer wax preparation FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 20 Nov 1973 [25 Nov 1972] 53829/73 Heading C3P A colourless olefin polymer wax is obtained by (a) polymerizing C 2 to C 12 alphamonolefins in the presence of a catalyst comprising (i) a titanium compound (ii) a magnesium compound, (iii) an organoaluminium compound and (iv) optionally a silicon compound, at 110 to 200 C., in the presence of hydrogen and (b) working up the polymerization mixture by treatment with steam at 110 to 180 C. to decompose the catalyst, and at least partially remove any solvent present without formation of an aqueous phase and separating the solid catalyst residues from the liquid polymer wax by filtration. In examples, polyethylene and ethylene-propylene copolymer waxes are obtained by (a) polymerization in the presence of TiCl 4 /Mg(OEt) 2 / AlEt 3 or Al(iBu) 3 , or Ti(O-i-Pr) 4 /Mg(OEt) 2 / AlEt 3 /SiCl 4 , and of hydrogen and an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent (b.p. 140 to 160 C.) or octane, and (b) treating the mixture with steam, followed by removing catalyst residues by filtering through a hot pressure filter, to obtain the clear liquid wax.
