Abstract

1444374 Form, fill and seal apparatus BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd 23 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 40324/73 Heading B8C [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for simultaneously heat sealing and intermittently drawing-on a heat sealable sheet material from a supply source, comprises a pair of heat seal jaws 7, a mechanism for cyclically closing the jaws 7 upon the sheet material, moving the closed jaws in a direction away from the supply source so as to draw a predetermined length of the sheet material from the supply source at the same time as heat sealing the sheet material, opening the jaws and returning the jaws to their original position, and two pads 20 (or 22, 22<SP>1</SP>), one associated with each jaw 7, adjacent to and movable with the jaws and capable of applying a grip to the sheet material at a position prior to its entering between the jaws 7 during the period the jaws are in the closed position. In a form, fill and seal packaging apparatus, Fig. 1, a web of sheet material 2, e.g. heat-seal coated cellulose film or heat-sealable polypropylene film, is shaped into a tube 4, by a former 1 and longitudinally heat sealed by a reciprocable bar 5 pressed against a filling tube 9 during rest periods in the intermittent downward movement of the sheet 2. A transverse seal 12 is effected by the jaws 7 which descend in closed position through a predetermined bag-length distance and simultaneously, a charge of merchandise 8 is introduced through the tube 9. At the bottom of the movement, a knive 11 in one jaw 7 cuts centrally through the seal 12. Preferably, the metal jaws 7 are serrated to provide a crimp seal. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, rubber strip pads 20 are mounted on members 16 slidable by rods 17 on brackets 15 on the jaws 7 and urged outwardly by springs 18. Nuts 19 are adjustable to ensure the outer edge of each pad 20 projects beyond the jaw face. During the draw-down movement of the jaws 7, the pads 20 provide a substantial portion of the traction applied to the tube 6. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, offset pads 22, 22<SP>1</SP> are provided on guide members 21 fixed to the jaws 7 so that, in the closed position of jaws 7, the tube 6 follows a sinuous path. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, similar to that of Fig. 2, the pads 20<SP>1</SP> and the members 16 are shorter than the jaws 7. The pads 20<SP>1</SP> comprise an electric current conducting silicon rubber secured to the earthed members 16 by electric current conducting cement to discharge any electrostatic charges if the tube 6 is made of, for example, polypropylene. The member 16 of the right-hand jaw 7 is mounted on an arm 23 pivoted at 24 and urged to the full-line position by a spring 25. In operation, an air cylinder 27 holds this pad 20<SP>1</SP> against the other pad 20<SP>1</SP>. On malfunction of the apparatus, air is withdrawn from the cylinder 27 to separate the pads 20<SP>1</SP> and prevent static electricity being induced in the tube 6.
