Abstract
1444191 Regulating output of screw extruders RUHRCHEMIE AG 1 March 1974 [5 March 1973] 9329/74 Heading B5A Polyolefin granules, intended for extrusion into flat, or tubular inflated films, which are orientated by stretching, are produced by cutting strands which are extruded by a single or multiple screw extruder in which the delivery zone of the screw, containing molten polyolefin, is surrounded by a water-cooled barrel which removes heat from the layer of molten polyolefin adjacent the barrel wall, and hence regulates the amount of leakage flow of the polyolefin between the screw flight and the barrel wall to obtain maximum output. The process enables a higher extrusion output to be obtained from the granules corresponding to that at which stretching of the film is facilitated. The polyolefin is delivered into the delivery zone at a temperature of 150‹ to 350‹ C., and preferably 180-220‹ C., and cooling is effected by water circulation channels in the barrel, extending parallel to the screw axis. The polyolefin preferably comprises a homo-polymer or co-polymer, of C 2 -C 5 olefin, and may comprise ethylene homo-polymer, or an ethylene/propylene co-polymer produced by a low pressure process.
