Abstract
1444187 Covering cores K P BIERER 24 Oct 1974 [25 July 1973] 35388/73 Heading B8G [Also in Divisions D1-D2] Yarn comprises three strands e.g. of monofil, multifilaments and/or staple fibres of natural, synthetic, metal or glass fibre materials. The first strand extends along the length of the yarn and the second and third strands lie helically therearound in opposite senses, crossing one another and with the second and third strands alternately on the outside. The two helices may be of equal pitch so that the crossover points of the second and third strands are alternately on opposite sides of the first strand. In the apparatus shown, strands 10, 11, 12 are supplied from spools 20, 21, 22, the latter two on fixed supports, so that the strands are drawn upwardly through tubular elements 23, 24, mounted in a fixed plate 25 to be driven rotatably in opposite directions at equal speeds about vertically closely-spaced axes from a shaft 26 through bevel wheels 28 and pinions 29, 30. Guides 23, 24, lead into tubular guides 31, 32, into which strands may be threaded through slots 33. Guides 31, 32, at their upper ends lie just outside the periphery of plate 34 and rotate therearound passing one another twice each revolution at diametrically opposite locations. The first strand is led from spool 20 over tensioning device 35 and this taut strand is combined with second and third strands carried by guides 31, 32, at a point below an aperture 36 in a guide 37 through which the assembled yarn passes to be wound on a take-up spool 38 (also drawn from shaft 26). The second and third strands extending upwardly from guides 31, 32, form helices (around the first strand) in opposite directions and with the second strand passing alternately inside and outside the third strand and, since guides 31, 32, have to be mounted below plate 34, they are required to pass through the support therefor. The latter may be enabled by use of magnetic or air levitation means (not shown): however, in the mechanism shown, a support structure 56 for plate 34 comprises two pairs of freely rotatable rollers 57, 58, and 59, 60 engaging similar rollers 50, 51, driven (as by belt 42, pulleys 54, 55, on shafts 52, 53) in opposite directions in synchronism with the rotation of guides 31, 32, whereby the latter, in operation and whilst rotating, pass through moving shaped helical slots 61 of rollers 50, 51, in arcuate paths thereacross.
