1443993 Polyene compounds F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 2 Nov 1973 [2 Nov 1972] 18974/75 Divided out of 1443992 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R 15 is an alkanoyl group of 2-18 carbon atoms or an aroyl group. The compounds are prepared by treating a compound of the formula with an alxanoic or an aroic acid. Compounds of the formula where # represents a cis-configuration and #<SP>1</SP> represents a trans-configuration may be prepared by treating a compound of the formula with an alkanoic or an aroic acid. Compounds of the formula where R 15 <SP>1</SP> is H, an alkanoyl group of 2-18 carbon atoms or an aroyl group may be prepared by treating a compound of Formula I with a compound of the formula where R 4 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkyl substituted cycloalkyl, phenyl, cycloalkyl or C 1 -C 6 alkyl substituted phenyl, R 5 has any of the values accorded to R 4 or is (R 4 ) 3 Si-, m is 1-3 and n is 0-2 with the proviso that the sum of m and n is 3, to form a compound of the formula reducing the keto group to a hydroxy group and dehydrating, optionally after converting the hydroxy group into a leaving group.
