Abstract

1443470 Prosthetic implant SULZER BROS Ltd 9 Oct 1973 [26 Oct 1972] 47106/73 Heading A5R A prosthetic implant comprises a socket 6 which is adapted to be anchored in a bone 1 e.g. a finger bone and a bone replacement member having an articular surface (not shown) and including a shank 4 which is releasably inserted in said socket 6. The socket, of a plastics material, such as polyester or polythene, and the bone replacement member, an alloy, are correspondingly tapered, the tapered shank 4 fitting into a blind tapered hole 5 in the socket 6. Owing to the shapes of these members the implant when assembled requires a minimum force which is greater than the normal loading in use to separate the members. A slot 8, formed at the outer end of the socket 6 receives a corresponding portion 9 of the shank to prevent rotation of the bone replacement member relative to the socket. In an alternative embodiment, the bone replacement member and the socket 6 may both have uniform circular or elliptical cross sections. The socket 6 is secured in the bone by means of bone cement 7 e.g. methyl methacrylate, the outer surface then being grooved, or alternatively the outer surface may be porous, enabling the living bone tissue to grow thereinto.
