Abstract

1442941 Magnetic separation; vibratory sieve S M ELDIN 7 Oct 1974 [8 Oct 1973] 43339/74 Headings B2H and B2J Domestic waste is fed from a funnel 2 to a sieve 8 by way of a conveyor 4 and a tearing devices 6, the smaller ingredients passing through the sieve on to a conveyor 10 where magnetic ingredients are separated from the rest by means of a separator 12. The langer ingredients pass over the sieve 8 and fall downwardly past a blower 16 which urges the lighter components, e.g. plastics film, paper and textiles, into a duct 20, whilst the heavier components fall into a conveyor system 30, 40. The duct 20 and the conveyers 30, 40 are each associated with respective rotating brushes 22, 32, 42 which electrostatically charge those components in the waste capable of being so charged. Detectors 24, 34 and 44 downstream of the respective brushes sense the polarity and/or magnitude of the charge on each component and control direction-changing devices, e.g. flaps 26, 36, 46 or jet nozzles, to separate the components into different fractions according to their charge. The conveyor 30 may also be provided with a magnetic separator 12'. The magnetic separator 12 or 12' may comprise a rotatable plastics drum associated with a stationary sector-shaped inner permanent or electro-magnet (Fig. 3, not shown). The sieve 8 is conical in form and comprises a single or multi-turn spiral coil spring (50) Fig. 2 (not shown) the turns of which are interconnected by plastics filaments (52) to form a mesh, the spring preferably being mechanically coupled to a vibrator (54).
