Abstract

1442735 Spring units GENERAL MOTORS CORP 28 March 1974 [26 April 1973 11 June 1973] 13745/74 Heading F2S [Also in Division E2] A closure and telescopic counterbalance assembly in which a closure 14 is hinged to a support 10 and is supported in an open position by a telescopic counterbalance 16 comprising a pair of telescopic tubular members, 70, 18, secured at their outer ends 40, 28, to the closure and the support respectively, resilient counterbalance means 48 seated between the members 20, 18 to bias them to an extended position, a booster spring 54 mounted in one member, 18, and abutment means 76 mounted on the other member 20, the booster spring 54 being unloaded except when engaged by the abutment means 76 during final movement of the tubular members 20, 18 to the retracted position upon movement of the closure 14 to a closed position. The embodiment shows the resilient counterbalance means 48 in the form of a helical spring containing a wooden mounting member 50 which supports the booster spring 54. The tubular members make sliding contact at the inner end of each at a flange 62 and a bushing 68, and also at a reduced section 58 of the outer member 18. A rib 60 on the inner member 20 co-operates with the reduced section 58 to form a stop at the fully extended position of the telescopic counterbalance 16, and an adjacent encircling C-clip 74, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) provides a releasable detent.
