Abstract

1442526 Punched tape reader ITT CREED Ltd 28 May 1974 23510/74 Heading G4M A punched tape reader has for each track on the tape a pecker 5, a tip 9 of which is urged to pass through the tape perforations. A magnet 4 is carried by the pecker for movement towards or away from a core 1 mounted on a single turn primary winding 2 common to all the cores. Each core has a secondary winding 3 and a pulse generator 10 is coupled to the primary winding. Each track may be associated with a single core (Fig. 1, not shown) or two cores (Fig. 2). In the latter case both cores are carried by the primary winding. The core towards which the magnet is moved becomes saturated and the core away from which the magnet is moved becomes unsaturated so that in the embodiment of Fig. 2 there is always the same number of saturated and unsaturated cores on the primary winding. If a core is saturated, e.g. because of the presence of a corresponding hole a pulse on the primary winding is not coupled to the secondary winding. Pulses on the secondary windings may be integrated (Figs. 3a, 3b, not shown) to incidate the nature of the detected bit. A pulse generator is described (Fig. 4, not shown).
