Abstract
1442245 Comminuted colourants BAYER AG 21 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 36750/74 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B2 and F4] Aggregated solid material, e.g. ceramic colourants and pigments are comminuted in an agitator mill which can be a core, hemisphere or cylinder with a charge of grinding media, e.g. quartz or zirconium sand of size 0À5 to 2 mm. Inlet and outlet sieves prevent loss of grinding media. The aqueous starting suspension is 40-60 by weight solids with a pH at least 7. The solids content is reduced by dilution to 10-30% by weight and the pH adjusted to 2-6À5 e.g. by addition of sulphuric or formic acid. The aqueous phase is reduced by 20% and the suspension optionally dried. The duct (see Division F4) has a steam heated jacket 3 and shaft 5 with agitators 4. Ground material is fed in via a pipe 1 and discharged at 7 into a horizontal drier 8 whose wall is heated to 450‹ C. by an electric element 9. Dried product is discharged via a pocket wheel 12. Vapours, e.g. formic acid, are condensed at 13. An example is given of a sintered CoAl 2 O 4 spinel pigment prepared on a rotary ring furnace, and then ground.
