Abstract

1441108 Cross-linked polymers; photopolymerizing unsaturated polyurethane derivatives C A REDFARN 22 April 1974 [23 Jan 1973 3329/73 Headings C3R and C3P [Also in Division G2] Cross-linked polymers are prepared by first reacting a saturated linear polyether based polyurethane prepolymer with at least the stoichiometric amount of an ethenoid monomer which is a hydroxy-alkyl ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, or with less than the stoichiometric amount of the ester and with a sufficient amount only of a saturated aliphatic alcohol containing at least 6 carbon atoms to make up the stoichiometric balance, and thereafter curing the resultant polymer by reaction with an ethenoid monomer selected from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, alkyl and hydroxy alkyl esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, styrene and divinyl benzene by exposure to u.v. light in the presence of a photo-chemical sensitizer. The ethenoid monomer used for curing may be added to the polymer after completion of the first reaction or may be present during the first reaction in which case it may be constituted by excess over the stoichiometric amount of the ethenoid monomer used in the first reaction. In examples a polyetherbased polyurethane prepolymer is reacted in the first stage with hydroxy ethyl acrylate or hydroxy ethyl methacrylate and optionally ethyl hexanol and where further monomer is required in the curing step with methyl methacrylate or butyl methacrylate. The sensitizers may be benzoin, anthraquinone, benzophenone, benzil, diacetyl, diphenyl sulphide, tetramethylthiuram sulphide, uranyl nitrate, uranyl propionate, stannic chloride, stannous chloride and titanium chloride. Dentures and printing plates may be produced from the polymers.
