Abstract
1440724 Ear implants J M FREDRICKSON 16 July 1974 31447/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division H4] An implantable hearing aid comprises a permanent magnet 12 (Fig. 4) which, in use, is rigidly secured to the stirrup bone 13 (stapes) of the ear and a coil 14 located coaxially around or above the magnet 12 in close provimity. When the coil 14 is energised by audio frequency signals the stirrup bone 13 is moved in the same manner as it would be by the anvil bone (incus) to cause vibration of the inner ear fluids. The coil 14 is permanently fixed by a support 15 held by non-tissue toxic cement 40 to bone within the mastoid bowl. Connections 16 from the coil 14 are preferably taken out of the ear through a hole drilled in the mastoid tip of the temporal bone (i.e. behind the outer ear). This hole receives the threads 36 (Fig. 10) of an externally threaded socket 35. The connections 16 lead to two female terminals 34 in a receptacle 11. These terminals 34 receive three pins 33 of a housing 10 enclosing a microphone, amplifier and battery. Two of the pins 33 are connected to the amplifier output while the third pin provides stability. A cap 37, which may have its top end closed (not shown) e.g. when swimming, is threaded on to the top of the socket 35 to hold housing 10 and receptacle 11 in position. Housing 10, receptacle 11 and socket 35 are of non tissue toxic material such as P.T.F.E. Cap 37 is of this material or of stainless steel. The microphone is a condenser type and the amplifier is preferably a logarithmic amplifier. Terminals 33 and 34 are gold plated. The magnet may be encased in and attached to the stirrup 13 by a holder of P.T.F.E. Alternatively magnet 12 is secured to stirrup 13 by non tissue toxic cement such as "SILASTIC" (Trade Mark) or "CRANIOPLAST" (Trade Mark), in which case it is either non tissue toxic, e.g. of "VITULIUM" (Trade Mark) or is encapsulated in non tissue toxic material. Alternatively the holder 17 is mechanically secured to the stirrup 13 without cement, the springiness of the holder providing the connection or the holder is crimped in position. The coil 14 is of copper wire embedded in "SILASTIC" (Trade Mark). In order to implant components 12, 15 and 17 a mastoidectomy is performed, the facial triangle bone is removed and the anvil bone is removed. The holder 15 is of silver wire flattened at the coil end. The microphone, amplifier and battery, individually or in total, may be located elsewhere than behind the ear. An implanted radio receiver may feed the coil, there being an external radio transmitter and microphone.
