Abstract
1440712 Selective signalling J P FAY 14 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 11401/74 Heading G4H In a communication system, a coaxial cable carries power from a central unit to an outstation unit, first and second D.C. signals from the outstation unit to the central unit where they actuate respective indicator means, and audio communication signals in both directions. As disclosed, a plurality of outstation patient units are linked to a central nurse unit by respective coaxial cables which also carry TV programmes to TV sets at the patient units and the outputs of patient sensors to the nurse unit. To call a nurse, the patient closes one of two switches (emergency and non-emergency) to send one of two D.C. levels to the nurse unit thereby setting one or both of two SCRs respective to the patient unit at the nurse unit to light one or both of two lamps. The emergency one of of these lamps, when lit, is flashed on and off, and the other is or not according to the position of a selector switch. A lamp at the patient unit and one of two lamps in the corridor near it, are also lit. To reply, the nurse at the nurse unit closes a switch, thereby resetting the SCRs, switching off all the lamps and taking over the patient's TV set for audio and visual communication from the nurse using a TV camera and microphone at the nurse unit, a microphone also being provided at the patient unit. Fire and smoke alarms can also be signalled using D.C. to the nurse unit.
