Abstract

144,057. Wood, H. May 10, 1919. Spraying travelling materials.- Relates to machines for conditioning paper and the like, when it is being cut into strips for subsequent spinning into yarns or threads or similar purposes, and consists in the provision of means whereby the amount of conditioning-liquid transferred to a roll of paper strips is varied automatically during the winding of each roll, means also being provided for adjusting the strength of the spray. The paper x, Fig. 1, to be conditioned passes from a roll a over a series of guide-rollers 1 to knives 2, 2a consisting of a series of spaced disks whereby the paper is cut into strips, which are then wound on a roll y. The rollers 1 and the knives are supported on a lever c fulcrumed. at c<1> and partly balanced by a weight c<3>, a roller 3 being retained in contact with the roll y by the weight of the parts. Supported in brackets beneath the roll y is a receptacle d for conditioning-liquid, in which rotates a brush e driven through a pulley e<1>, which brush projects liquid on to the roll. Covers h, h<1> are movable vertically and obliquely to preserve a constant distance from the roll surface and to widen the opening h<2> as the roll increases in size, so that the paper receives a regular amount of liquid during the winding. Plates h<3>, h<4> return excess of liquid, while, in the higher positions, the side edges h<5> of the covers overlap. The movement of the covers is controlled by bars k, k<1> attached thereto and resting on a cross-bar m supported by a bowl m<1> adjustably and flexibly connected to the lever c, so that the cross-bar m falls as the lever e rises with the increase in size of the roll. The covers drop with the cross-bar and are opened simultaneously by bowls 5 on the bars k, k<1> engaging in slotted inclined guides 6, Figs. 4 and 5, fulcrumed at 6<a> to brackets 7 at the sides of the machine and having further slotted parts 6b by means of which their inclination, and consequently the amount of opening of the covers, is controlled. The strength of the spray is controlled by a comb e<7>, Fig. 3, engaging the brush e, the position of the comb c<7> being adjusted by a hand-wheel e<5> operating a screw e<4> engaging the supporting-lever e<2>. The handwheel may have an indicating finger and dial.
