Abstract

1440168 Polymer dispersions and their preparation ROHM GmbH 7 May 1974 [7 May 1973 14 March 1974] 20093/74 Heading C3P A polymer dispersion comprises a continuous organic phase which is not completely miscible with water, and an aqueous phase comprising a water-soluble polymer dissolved in, or swelled with, water, the dispersion containing a waterin-oil emulsifying agent which is soluble in the organic phase and which comprises (a) a vinyl polymer consisting of: (i) 10-50% by weight of at least one vinyl monomer containing a basic nitrogen atom; and (ii) 90-50% by weight of at least one vinyl monomer containing a side chain comprising an alkyl group of at least 6 carbon atoms, or a mixture of such a monomer with less than 50 wt. per cent (of the mixture) of one or more further water-insoluble vinyl comonomers; and, optionally (b) one or more other surface-active compounds; the emulsifying agent having a resulting HLB value below 6 at a pH above 4, and above 8 at a pH below 2. The monomer (i) may comprise a vinylpyridine, a vinylimidazole or an amide or dialkylaminoalkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Monomer (ii) may be an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and an alkanol having 6 or more carbon atoms. Monomer (ii) may also comprise less than 50 wt. per cent of styrene and/or a C 1 -C 4 ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The vinyl polymer, which may have a molecular weight above 10,000, preferably constitutes 2-20 wt. per cent of the organic phase. The water-soluble polymer may have a molecular weight above 1,000,000, and may comprise units of acrylamide, vinylpyrrolidone, vinyl alcohol, a (hydroxyalkyl)-acrylate or -methacrylate, (methacryloxy ethyl)-trimethylammonium chloride, or the sodium salt of vinylsulphonic or styrenesulphonic acid. Preferably the aqueous phase comprises 50-60 wt. per cent of the water-soluble polymer. The organic continuous phase is preferably a mineral oil, forming, e.g. 15-20% by volume of the dispersion. The dispersion, which may have a viscosity of 1000-20,000 cp., may also include a water-soluble acid. The dispersion may be made by dispensing in the organic phase an aqueous solution comprising the appropriate monomers, and polymerizing in the presence of an initiator.
