1439778 Smoking articles comprising ventilated wrappers PHILIP MORRIS INC 13 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 57792/73 Heading A2C A smoking article comprises a cylinder of tobacco, a wrapper of combustible material enclosing said cylinder of tobacco, and a non- toxic composition, impervious to air and coating at least certain portions of said wrapper which are pervious to air prior to being coated with said composition, the composition being dissipatalble under the influence of heat so as to admit the passage of air through the wrapper into the cylinder of tobacco during the course of smoking the article, wherein the composition comprises a heat softenable copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate having a softening point above 80‹C and an amount of at least one compatible additive effective to depress the softening point to 65‹-80‹C. The additive may be a substantially non-volatile ester, e.g. the triacetate and tristearate of glycerol, the tetraacetate, tetrastearate, tetrabehenate and partially esterified stearate of pentaerythritol; methyl palmitate and dimethyl sebacate; C 12-30 fatty acids such as lauric, palmitic, stearic and behenic as well as their soaps; non-volatile hydrocarbons such as paraffins, microcrystalline wax, dotriacontane, squalene, ceresin and ofocerite; natural waxes such as bees-wax, spermaceti and candelilla wax; and C 12-30 alcohols such as lauryl, myristyl, octadecyl, behenyl or 12-hydroxy stearyl alcohols. The additive may be present in an amount 20- 350% by weight of the copolymer. The composition may also comprise an inert filler or pigment in an amount up to 250% of the total weight of the copolymer and the additive. This may be titanium dioxide, talc, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, carbon black, powdered cellulose, silica or zinc carbonate. Dyes can also be used in the composition. The composition may include a dispersant for the inert filler or pigment, e.g. metal salts of fatty acids, a nonylorthocresol-ethylene oxide condensation product, sodium alkyl-aryl sulphonate or sodium lauryl sulphate. The material may be applied as a hot melt. The material preferably constitutes a film over the entire length of the wrapper and the thickness of the film may be up to 25Á. The composition may be placed on either or both sides of the cigarette wrapper. The wrapper may be provided with holes therein to render it pervious to air and these holes are covered with the composition so as to render the wrapper temporarily impervious to air.
