Abstract

1439689 Vehicle windscreen SAINTGOBAIN INDUSTRIES 20 Dec 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 59024/73 Heading B7J [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A vehicle window pane comprises a conducting assembly which is so spaced from the edges of the pane that when mounted in the vehicle body its capacitance thereto does not exceed 100 pF. Collectors are provided in the assembly between which heating members are connected. End extensions on at least one of said collectors, to which no heating members are connected, permit the assembly to be used for the reception of FM signals (frequency band 80 to 100 MHz). As described, a laminated safety windscreen 1, Fig. 1, has a polyvinyl butyral interlayer in which a conductive assembly is located. This comprises a plurality of vertical parallel resistive wires 2, an upper collector 3 to which all the wires 2 are connected, and lower collectors 4, 5 to each of which half of the wires 2 are connected. The collectors are metal, e.g. silver, bands and the lower collectors 4, 5 are provided with respective free extensions 9, 10. In this embodiment the conductive assembly is asymmetrically disposed with respect to the vertical centre-line of the windscreen. It is spaced from the edges of the windscreen to reduce coupling to the body of the vehicle in which it is installed. The inner ends of the lower collectors are connected by leads 6, 7 through VHF by-pass capacitors 19, 20 to a cable 17, and to the contacts 11, 12 of a relay 13. In the position shown, with the relay 13 de-energized, the leads 6, 7 are directly connected through the contacts 11, 12 to the cable 17, and a receiver 16 may be used in both the AM and FM ranges. When the relay 13 is energized, by a switch 18, current is supplied by the battery through VHF chokes to the heating wires 2. The receiver is usable for FM reception, since the leads 6, 7 remain connected to the cable 17 through the capacitors 19, 20. An indicator light 21 shows that the heating is on. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a heatable vehicle rear window comprises a single sheet of glass on which a conductive assembly is deposited by silk screen printing followed by baking. The conductive assembly includes vertical collectors on opposite sides of the window between which resistive bands run. One collector is provided with horizontally disposed extensions at its ends. A third embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) is similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but the conductive assembly is symmetically disposed, the resistive wires are replaced by thin transparent sheets of, for example, tin oxide, and the outer ends of the lower conductors are turned up to run parallel to the sides of the windscreen. Specifications 1,374,741 and 1,318,471 are mentioned.
