Abstract

1438956 Anatomical models D R GARBE 7 Sept 1973 [9 Sept 1972] 41962/72 Heading G5G [Also in Division A5] An anatomical model of the human head and neck for teaching the intubation of the human trachea, comprises a plurality of artificial parts including an epiglottis a<SP>2</SP>, a tongue a<SP>1</SP>, a larynx j and mouth parts, the epiglottis and tongue forming an assembly having a metal insert a pivotally mounted at b, the said assembly being biased into a position at least partially obscuring the larynx by the elastic resilience of the tongue part, the arrangement being such that the said assembly may be manipulated through the said mouth parts with a laryngoscope to simulate visual exposure of the human larynx. The lip parts of the mouth parts of the model are formed of resiliently deformable material which is stiffened internally by a ring z. The model has a lower jaw part e or rigid polyurethane and is movable in an anterior direction. A retro-laryngeal pathway is provided. Interchangeable upper dentures s are provided which are resiliently mounted on a bracket t backed by a micrometer switch u which forms part of a circuit including also a battery w and warning buzzer v, which is completed when pressure is exerted on the upper teeth. The said larynx may be resiliently mounted so that application of external manual pressure causes posterior movement and it may be adjusted in position by means of a screw r and clamp k<SP>1</SP> arrangement. The trachea tube j, which is of flexible material, connects with a bronchi bifurcation block I by means of a short rigid tube k, the said block l communicating with a pair of bronchi tubes n which terminate in a pair of inflatable bags p representing lungs.
