Abstract
1438783 Formaldehyde-based thermosetting resin compositions UNION CARBIDE CORP 11 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27756/73 Headings C3R and C3P A moulding composition comprises a mixture containing a formaldehyde-based thermosetting resin and from 5-50% by weight of poly-(vinyl alcohol) fibres, based on the weight of the mixture, the fibres having a weight average fibre length of from <SP>1</SP>/ 100 to <SP>1</SP>/ 8 inch. The resin may be a phenol-formaldehyde novolak or resole resin, bisphenol-A-formaldehyde resin, a urea-formaldehyde resin or a melamine-formaldehyde resin. The fibres generally have deniers of from ¢ to 100, preferably 3-30. The compositions may also comprise one or more of fillers such as wood flour, asbestos and clay, pigments, lubricants and hardeners such as hexamethylenetetramine. In the examples moulding compositions are prepared which are moulded by extrusion, injection and transfer moulding processes and the Izod impact strength of the moulded products are determined.
