Abstract

1438769 Supersonic jet engine air intakes DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 17 Oct 1973 [26 Oct 1972] 49459/72 Headings F1G and F1J A supersonic, mixed-compression jet engine air intake has walls defining a convergent-divergent flow passage having a throat therein at the plane P, the walls comprising a first wall 1 and a second wall 2a, 2b opposite thereto, the second wall having formed therein a duct entrance 3 extending upstream from the throat, the upstream edge of the duct entrance being located in a region opposite the upstream termination of the first wall 1. The intake normal shock wave A, when located upstream of the throat, terminating on a streamline boundary E extending across the duct entrance, inlet air in excess of engine air demand being discharged into the duct entrance downstream of the intake normal shock wave. The object of the invention is to avoid the phenomenon known as "unstart" which occurs when the normal shock wave moves upstream from its design point at the intake throat.
