Abstract
1438761 Silencing gaseous flow IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 June 1973 [28 June 1972] 30254/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division B1] To compensate for the difference in thermal expansion between a containing vessel 20 and its refractory contents, e.g. a ceramic monolith 10 having uninterrupted gas flow passages therethrough or refractory particles, the contents are supported by packing material 14 comprising refractory fibres composed substantially of alumina and/or zirconia of a thickness under 10 microns and substantially free of shot. The fibres are not bonded to one another by an inorganic bonding agent and the difference in thermal expansion is at least partly compensated for by recovery or further strain of the packing material. The fibres may be bonded to one another by a fugitive organic polymer. Wads of packing material may be cemented together at 16 and to the monolith 10 and/or the vessel 20. The monolith may be eliptical, Figs. 2 to 5 (not shown), or a plurality of monoliths may be spaced by layers of packing material, Fig. 8 (not shown). Cement may be injected between the vessel and the packing material through an aperture (26), Figs. 3 and 4, and grooves (24) in the vessel. The monolith(s) may carry a layer of active alumina or an alkaline earth oxide and examples of catalysts to be carried on the layer are given in the Specification. The Specification also includes description of methods of forming the packing material and assembly in the vessel.
