Abstract

1438754 Determining cloud point MECTRON (FRIGISTOR) Ltd 1 June 1973 [1 March 1972] 9598/72 Heading G1A Apparatus for carrying out a cloud point determination of a sample comprises a container 11 for a sample having a light reflecting concave end portion, and a detector which includes a single bifurcated light guide 15 arranged with the ends of the two branches 16, 17 outside the container, and the common end 18 inside the container facing the concave end portion, a temperature 23 detector being mounted in the container for indicating the temperature at which particles form in the sample as it cools. As shown, a light source 21 is provided at the end of branch 16, and a light detector 22, e.g. an integrated circuit acting as a switch is provided at the end of branch 17. The branches 16, 17 are flexible, whereas the common end 18 is rigid, the light guide being formed of bundles of optical fibres and being movable to effect focusing. The concave end is silvered on its inner or outer surface. The temperature sensitive device 23, e.g. a platinum resistance thermometer is preferably linked to the light detector so that the cloud point temperature is automatically recorded when the detector switches over upon detection of the cloud point. A compensated light source and level detector of the form describing Specification 1197568 could be used. Cooling may be stopped or reversed when the cloud point is reached.
