Abstract

1438551 Electro-deposition of Ni-Fe and Ni-Fe -Co alloys OXY METAL INDUSTRIES CORP 31 May 1973 [3 July 1972] 25949/73 Heading C7B An electro-plated article comprises a metal substrate, e.g. of copper, brass or steel, having deposited thereon optionally a coating of e.g. brass, copper or nickel; a coating of Ni - Fe or Ni -Fe - Co alloy; optionally a nickel coating e.g. containing SiOz particles; and a layer of micro - discontinuous chromium. The plating bath for the Ni - Fe or Ni - Fe Co layer may contain Ni as SO 4 , Cl or sulphamate, Fe as SO 4 , Cl, fluoborate or sulphamate; a carboxylic acid or salt as iron complexing agent (e.g. citric, malic, glutamic &c.); a buffer such as boric acid or sodium acetate; and a nickel brightener such as a sulpho-oxygen compound, e.g. saccharin, naphthalene trisulphonic acid or sulphobenzaldehyde, an acetylenic brightener e.g. propargyl alcohol, or a lower alkylene oxide, e.g. epichlorohydrin or ethylene oxide, or nitrogen containing heterocylic quaternary or betaine brighteners, e.g. pyridine sulphobetaine or quinaldine propane sultone. Various other examples of suitable brighteners are given. Soluble Fe or Fe-Ni anodes may be used.
