Abstract

1438497 Fluid regulation ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 30 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55560/72 Heading G3H [Also in Division G4] In a fluidic amplifier or switch, e.g. a bi-stable unit 10, comprising a splitter 18, Fig. 1, control passages 14, 16, two output ducts 20, 22 and vents 24, 26, a vortex chamber 28, 30 is located in at least one of the ducts 20, 22 for reducing the output pressure therein when the main flow is deflected into the other duct. When the main flow is deflected into, e.g., duct 20 some of the flow passes to outlet 32 at pressure OP 1 and the remainder passes through a conduit 36 tangentially into vortex chamber 30 to establish a vortex therein. Some of the vortex flow passes along duct 22 to vent 26 at pressure Pr and the remainder passes to outlet 34 at a pressure OP 2 somewhat lower than the vent pressure Pr, thereby establishing a relatively high-pressure difference (OP 1 -OP 2 ). The conduit 36 can be arranged to choke at sonic velocity when conveying compressible gas. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), only the duct (22) is provided with a vortex chamber, the latter being connected to the duct (22) via a short convergent nozzle (42).
